Let’s Have an Honest Conversation About the “P” Word

Let’s Have an Honest Conversation About the “P” Word

Grab a coffee, take a breath, and come sit with me for a minute. I want to talk about something we usually sweep under the rug, but it’s actively holding so many brilliant women back.

We need to talk about profit.

Lately, it feels like everyone on social media is chasing revenue. “Six-figure launch!” “Seven-figure year!” But let’s be real for a second: revenue can be a massive vanity metric, just like your follower count. Just because people follow you doesn’t mean they buy from you. And just because your business brings in a lot of cash doesn't mean you actually get to keep any of it.

The only number that truly mattersthe one that decides whether your business is working for you, or whether you are quietly enslaved to itis profit.

But before we dive into the spreadsheets, we have to look at what’s happening upstairs.

Because the truth is, your bottom line is a direct reflection of your mindset.

1. What Do You Really Think About Making Money?

I want you to be completely honest with yourself right now. What goes through your mind when you think about making money? Not just “paying the bills” money, but lots of money. Huge profit.

Since I started coaching in 2019, I’ve worked with hundreds of women, and when we start talking about big money, the same defensive phrases always pop up:

“I’m not doing this for the money, I'm doing it for the purpose.”

“Focusing too much on money makes you greedy.”

“If I’m chasing profit, I must be taking advantage of someone.”

If you’ve ever thought this, I get it. We’ve been conditioned to think this way. But it’s a lie, and it’s keeping you small.

The brilliant Barbara Huson, who spent decades studying financially successful women, said it perfectly:

Fixing your business health isn't a spreadsheet fix first. It’s a belief fix.

2. What Is Your Profit Number? (No Hiding!)

Okay, here is the second question, and promise me you won’t close this tab.

What is your actual profit number?

If your stomach just tightened, you aren’t alone. So many women business owners have no idea what their number is. We hide from it. We avoid the dashboard, look away from the bank accounts, and just hope the vibes are good.

But here’s a quick gut check: if you aren’t paying yourself a real, market-based salary for the work you do, your profit number is lying to you. “Profit” that only exists because you’re underpaying yourself isn’t profit – it's just deferred wages.

Once you pay yourself fairly, your pre-tax profit should be at least 10%. That’s the floor, not the ceiling. Healthy, resilient businesses live at 15% or higher.

When you don’t know your number, or when that number is zero, you're living in a constant state of anxiety. You're one late-paying client or one slow month away from closing your doors. You stay capped at whatever you can physically grind out.

3. How We Start to Fix It

The good news? You don't need an accounting degree to fix this.

First, mindset always comes first.

You have to decide, right now, that you are allowed to be profitable. You have to choose to stop operating from fear and start operating from choice.

Second, the execution is beautifully simple.

There are really only three levers you can pull to change your profit:

  • Make more without spending more.

  • Spend less (cut everything that isn’t essential).

  • A little bit of both.

Every financial fix you will ever make runs through those options. It's not magic; it's just math fueled by a shift in your perspective.

Why This Matters So Much (For All of Us)

Here is why I care about this so deeply. This isn't just about numbers on a screen; it’s about community.

When women build financially healthy businesses, incredible things happen.

We hire other women.

We pay fair, market-based wages.

We reinvest in our families, our teams, and our neighborhoods.

When a woman thrives financially, her entire community thrives.

Profit isn't a dirty word. It is stability.

It's the difference between a business that fuels your life, and one that quietly consumes it.
